The Virginia defense comes up with a huge stop as Nick Grant and Nick Jackson team up to bring Connor Blumrick down short of the first down and Virginia Tech is forced to punt.
Armstrong goes right back to Wicks for a gain of nine yards on the left sideline and then Jelani Woods catches a pass for a first down.
Armstrong throws to Malachi Fields, who breaks a tackle and runs for 18 yards and another UVA first down. Keytaon Thompson hauls in a reception to set up first and goal. Billy Kemp scores a nine-yard touchdown, but it is waived off for a holding penalty on Wayne Taulapapa. Three plays later, Armstrong passes to Jelani Woods who runs into the end zone for an yard touchdown.
Tech's Dorian Strong had a chance to make a hit at the goal line, but elected to get out of the way of the Woods train. Braxton Burmeister goes to the air for the first time today and completes the pass to Da'Wain Lofton for a first down. Virginia Tech jumps offsides and Armstrong takes the deep shot on the free play to Ra'Shaun Henry, who makes a leaping catch on the right sideline but he is called out of bounds.
Play was reviewed and confirmed. Back-to-back runs by Mike Hollins moves the chains for Virginia. Armstrong throws a yard completion to Dontayvion Wicks, who takes a hit and is upended, but immediately pops up and signals for the first down. With the reception, Wicks breaks Herman Moore's record for single-season receiving yards at Virginia. Armstrong eludes multiple tacklers and scrambles for a first down at the VT 4-yard line.
Two plays later, Armstrong keeps again and punches it in for a touchdown to regain the lead. Braxton Burmeister breaks loose for a yard run before being chased out of bounds by Darrius Bratton at the UVA 3-yard line.
That play ends the first quarter and the Cavaliers still hold a 7 point lead, but the Hokies are knocking at the door. UVA holds Virginia Tech out of the end zone on three-straight goal line rushes. On fourth and goal, Burmeister fakes the handoff and rolls out to the right side. Joey Blount comes up and Burmeister tries to throw over him to Raheem Blackshear, but it falls incomplete. Huge stop for the Cavalier defense and Virginia takes over on downs.
Billy Kemp makes an amazing catch on the sideline on third down to get UVA out of the shadow of its own end zone and move the chains. UNC's defense has stopped four straight third downs now. Third quarter: Virginia Tech 14, No. The Tar Heels finally get on the board and get their offense rolling as Howell hits Josh Downs for a yard touchdown, continuing Howell's streak of recording a touchdown in every game he's played in.
Virginia Tech 14, North Carolina 7. Mack Brown's squad is right bakc in it with left in the third quarter. Howell hits Downs and the Heels are on the board! Howell gets picked off on second-and-8 by Virginia Tech's Jermaine Waller and the Hokies take over at their The third sack tonight for that unit and it's second-and right out of the half time break. Halftime: Virginia Tech 14, No. The Hokies ran the ball 27 times in the first half and though they're only averaging 2.
Braxton Burmeiester has looked like the far better quarterback so far this evening, going 7-for-8 with yards and a passing touchdown in the air while contributing six carries, 17 yards and a rushing touchdown on the ground as well. Howell has struggled to find a steady target after graduating nearly 4, yards of offense last year as he's just 4-of-8 for 58 yards and has peeled off a few big plays, but none that have put UNC in particularly good field position and their offense has lacked a dynamism to be potent and challenge the Virginia Tech defense.
UNC comes out of the half and will receive as they look to try and get on board. Burmeister converts in the red zone on the run and under pressure, finds James Mitchell for 11 yards to cap off a 12 play, 80 yard drive. The Hokies are 6-for-6 on third down tonight and have done a great job mixing up the offense and confusing the UNC defensive unit with left in the half. The Hokies offensive line has been dominant as well. Tar Heels need a stop here on this next Hokie drive.
First quarter: Virginia Tech 7, No. The Tar Heels hope this offensive drive goes better than their first.
